Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia, was initially written in response to the questions of François Barbé-Marbois in 1780. He revised his responses to the Secretary of the French delegation in Philadelphia in 1782 and 1783. The final version of the book was published in 1785. It was initially published anonymously in France. Many of the comments regarding separation of church and state, as well as race relations, were used as the basis to describe him as an atheist and question his views about race relations during his 1804 presidential campaign.
