In the fall 1787, it was questionable whether the document created by the delegates to Constitutional Convention would be ratified by the states. There was serious concern about the absence of any guarantee of individual liberties from delegates who participated, such as Elbridge Gerry, and well known Founding Fathers such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Patrick Henry. James Madison, and other patriots who favored the newly written Constitution assured those skeptics that individual rights would be amended into the document as soon as the Congress was established. Madison is not only known as the “Father of the Constitution” because he laid the framework, and wrote a significant portion for the document that serves as the cornerstone for our Federal Government, but he was the member of Congress who proposed more than 39 individual rights be added into the Constitution. A committee narrowed Madison’s proposal down to what we now know as the first ten Amendments. In those Amendments are guarantees to such amazing assurances of individual sovereignty such as freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and protection from unwarranted search and seizure. We commonly refer to the first ten Amendments to the United States Constitution as the Bill of Rights.
