American Flag

The American Flag

OUR LOVELY BANNER.

Ne’er waved beneath the golden sun

A lovelier banner for the brave

Than that our bleeding fathers won,

And proudly to their children gave ;

Nor earth a fairer gem can bring,

Or freedom claim a brighter scroll,

Than that to which our free hearts cling —

Rev. George W. Gue, Our Country’s Flag (1890)

“There are two things holy — the flag which represents military honor, and the law which represents the national right.” – Victor Hugo

The flag of the United States of America, or the American Flag was first established by the following statement by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777:

“Resolved, That the flag of the ∥thirteen∥ United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Act of Congress Calling for Addition of 2 Stripes and 2 Stars for Vermont and Kentucky – Approved by George Washington on January 13, 1794. As more states were added to the union, the stripes were returned to the original number of 13
