From the beginning we have been a nation of individuals. The early settlers founded colonies which held widely different perspectives on the same issue. As the colonies became states, and the states formed a republic, there was great debate about the extent and nature of the federal government. Each state that has since joined the union brings something different to the mix. Today the citizens of different regions, states, counties, and even cities continue to view issues differently. Yet, we are held together by our common belief in liberty, individual sovereignty, and other core principles that were laid out in our founding documents. We are indeed a nation of individuals who collectively are “One nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all!”
