What IS Right With America? Our Desire for Independence!
On Tuesday, July 2, 1776 a resolve was passed in Philadelphia. It was on that day, not July 4, the Continental Congress actually voted to seek independence from Britain. With New York abstaining, representatives from the twelve other colonies approved what later became known as the Lee Resolution. What I found particularly interesting was that the resolve was not passed as the first order of business. First, letters from various individuals (including George Washington) and the Massachusetts Bay Council were presented. Then, orders and resolves were passed regarding those letters. It was only then that Charles Thomson recorded the following in the Papers of the Continental Congress (No. 23, folio 17): “The Congress resumed the consideration of the resolution agreed to by and reported from the committee of the whole; and the same being read, was agreed to as follows: Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and, of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown, and that all political connexion between them, and the state of Great Britain, is, and ought to be, totally dissolved…. Resolved, That this Congress will, to morrow, again resolve itself into a committee of the whole, to take into their farther consideration the declaration on independence.” In the July 2nd Pensylvania Evening Post, a simple notice can be found: “This day the Continental Congress declared the United Colonies Free and Independent States.” John Adams speculated to his wife, Abigail, that “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.”
Please take a moment to reflect on the firm resolve of the colonists, in the Continental Congress and throughout the Colonies, who were determined to free themselves from tyranny and seek independence. That resolve has been ingrained in and displayed by Americans throughout the history of our country. It is shown here in this image of the World War II Memorial lit by the fireworks of a Fourth of July Celebration. That resolve is just another example of What IS Right With America!
