What IS Right With America? The Example Set by Our First President

“The welfare of our country is the great object to which our cares and efforts ought to be directed.– And I shall derive great satisfaction from a cooperation with you, in the pleasing though arduous task of ensuring to our fellow citizens the blessings which they have a right to expect, from a free and equal government. George Washington’s First Annual Message to the Congress, January 8, 1790.

Imagine a national executive who extended a hand in cooperation to the Congress. Imagine the same executive professing that a free and equal government had the task of insuring the blessings which its citizens had a right to expect. Imagine having a federal government which was led by a man who conducted himself with a sense of civility and decorum. All of these qualities typified George Washington during his presidency. Washington was so well regarded that it is clear the delegates at the Constitutional Convention created the office of national executive with Washington in Mind.

On this President’s Day, please take a moment to consider our country’s good fortune to have such a man set the standard for all those who have followed in his footsteps. George Washington exemplifies What IS Right With America.
