“In all our associations; in all our agreements let us never lose sight of this fundamental maxim—that all power was originally lodged in, and consequently is derived from, the people. We should wear it as a breastplate, and buckle it on as our armour.” George Mason– 1775

The belief that all power originated in the people is why this principle was included in the majority of the state constitutions, have a provision similar the following from Vermont’s original constitution written in 1777: “That all power being originally inherent in, and consequently, derived from, the people; therefore, all officers of government, whether legislative or executive, are their trustees and servants, and at all times accountable to them.”

Please take a moment to consider that because the power of our nation emanates from the people, elected and appointed governmental officials truly are the people’s trustees and servants. They are accountable to us, but we must hold them accountable rather than waiting for someone else to stand and act on our behalf. Like the lava flow of a volcano…the people’s power cannot be stemmed once it begins to move against injustice, oppression, and tyranny. That is What IS Right With America.
